Kephalonia ISLAND, GREECE

Cephalonia is a repository for Beyond Spaces experiences.

The largest of the Ionian Islands, Cephalonia combines verdant scenery with stunning shores to picture perfect effect.

Towering the island, Mountain Ainos is a designated ‘national park’, covered with the unique Cephalonia pine, distinguished for its straight trunk, its rich pyramid-shaped foliage and its characteristic pine needles.

Argostoli, the island’s capital, is a modern town, bustling with energy. Walk up the large palm-treed Valianou Square to see the imposing Government House and Town Hall buildings. Take the pedestrianised Lithostroto Street, the main commercial road, and stop to admire the beautiful church of Saint Spyridon with its excellent gilded wood-carved reredos.

In Argostoli’s bay, the Castle of Agios Georgios, the old capital of the island, remains majestic until today, and is a typical sample of the Venetian fortress craft. Head to the Devosetou Bridge, a jewel of Argostoli, which connects the city with the other edge of the lagoon of Koutavos, whose wild vegetation and a forest of tall eucaluptuses will astound you. In the evening, catch a performance in Kefalos Theatre.

From Sami, a coveted port, ships leave daily for Patra, Ithaki and Italy. The truth is that impressive hills and amazing beaches make Sami hard to leave.

In Lixouri, the  beaches of Lepeda, Xi and Mega Lakos are also among the island’s finest. Proud of its musical tradition, Lixouri boasts one of the oldest philharmonic orchestras in Greece.

Moor your yacht in Assos’s picturesque little harbor and walk to the village, where houses appear to be covered in pine and cypress trees. Swim in the large sandy beach of Skala or visit the ruins of a Roman villa, where a magnificent mosaic floor reveals a glorious past. Go off the beaten track and climb up the historic Monastery of Panagia Atrou in the area of Poros. The beach of Myrtos in close proximity to Assos is not be missed with its aqua clear waters and dramatic cliff as a backdrop.

Fiscardo lends a glimpse into the glorious past that once was, with its beautiful 18th century houses and the overall atmosphere of grandeur. Fiscardo is considered the most cosmopolitan village of Cephallonia, where you will find the most sought after restaurants, cafes and shops. Fiscardos quaint and picturesque harbour is where all the Greek yaughts sailing around the area will moor for an evening of socializing and culinary pleasure.
